June 16, 2026
Five days, a parade of Group 1s and the best stables in the world all chasing silverware — Royal Ascot 2026 is almost here. From proven champions to unbeaten up-and-comers, here are the eight horses we think are worth watching closely this week.
Few fixtures capture the British summer quite like Royal Ascot. For five days every June, the Berkshire course becomes the centre of the flat-racing universe — pristine turf, royal pageantry, and a roll-call of the planet's finest horses, trainers, jockeys and owners all gathered in one place.
The 2026 renewal looks every bit as deep as we've come to expect. Group 1 contests are spread right across the week, and the sport's biggest yards — Aidan O'Brien, Charlie Appleby, John & Thady Gosden and more — are lining up their leading lights. The market shapes around names like Opera Ballo, Bow Echo, Gstaad and Precise, but as ever at Ascot, a few less obvious runners have been quietly building a buzz of their own.
From established Group 1 performers to potential breakout stars, these are the eight horses we'll be following most closely across Royal Ascot 2026 — race by race, contender by contender.
Age: 4yo · Trainer: Charlie Appleby · Owner: Godolphin · Race: Queen Anne Stakes (1m)
Godolphin's bay colt arrives in superb order for the week's opening mile feature. Over the past 12 months he's caught the eye at Sandown, Meydan and Newmarket, banking four wins from his last five starts — the latest a clear-cut success at Sandown in April. His toughest opposition could come from inside his own yard: stablemate Notable Speech heads the early market, with William Haggas' More Thunder also in the mix.
Age: 3yo · Trainer: George Boughey · Owner: Exors of the Late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid · Race: St James's Palace Stakes (1m)
Unbeaten and heading the betting, Bow Echo has already strung together a perfect mile record at Newmarket, Haydock and Newbury. His most recent outing was a real statement — he found extra in the closing stages to hold off Gstaad, who lines up against him again here. Expect Aidan O'Brien's Gstaad to renew the rivalry, while Charlie Appleby's Talk Of New York has been shortening fast in the early lists. There's serious strength in this field.
Age: 3yo · Trainer: Aidan O'Brien · Owner: Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor · Race: St James's Palace Stakes (1m)
Aidan O'Brien's contender is a versatile colt who has handled a range of trips. Lately he's settled into the mile division, winning at the Curragh and Del Mar, with that narrow Newmarket defeat to Bow Echo the only blot on a strong recent run. A reversal of form against his old rival is the obvious storyline — though, as in the rest of this race, Talk Of New York can't be dismissed.
Age: 3yo · Trainer: Aidan O'Brien · Owner: Smith / Magnier / Tabor / Westerberg · Race: Coronation Stakes (1m)
The chestnut filly tops the early Coronation Stakes market and looks thoroughly at home over a mile. She showed her class last time at the Curragh in May, accounting for stablemate True Love — who also turns up here. True Love figures to be her main danger again, but keep an eye on Charlie Appleby's Abashiri, who has the potential to upset the script.
Age: 3yo · Trainer: Aidan O'Brien · Owner: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier · Race: Coronation Stakes (1m)
Another O'Brien filly and a regular sparring partner for Precise, True Love has plenty of ability of her own despite coming off second-best at the Curragh last time. The team will fancy a turnaround over this Ascot mile.
Age: 4yo · Trainer: Roger Varian · Owner: Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum · Race: Gold Cup (2m4f)
Roger Varian's bay colt is flagged among the early Gold Cup market leaders. His last year has been a mixed bag, but he signed off with a win at York over 1m6f and looks a tempting price. The big unknown is the trip — at 2m4f he's stepping well beyond anything he's tackled before. Watch for Scandinavia, who beat him at Doncaster back in September, and Trawlerman, whose stamina credentials are proven.
Age: 8yo · Trainer: John & Thady Gosden · Owner: Godolphin · Race: Gold Cup (2m4f)
The defending champion knows exactly where the winning post is — he landed this very race in 2025 and clearly relishes Ascot. He may be the senior member of the line-up at eight, but there's plenty left in the legs: he proved it in October with victory in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, seeing off a younger field over two miles. The only question is whether he has enough in reserve to go back-to-back against the likes of Scandinavia and Rahiebb. A successful title defence would make for a wonderful headline.
Age: 4yo · Trainer: F-H Graffard · Owner: Aga Khan Studs SCEA · Race: Prince of Wales's Stakes (1m2f)
A Longchamp specialist with three wins from his last four, Daryz is one of the more eagerly awaited runners of the meeting. The Francis-Henri Graffard-trained colt has already beaten smart rivals such as Bay City Roller, Minnie Hauk and Oracle. He may head the market, but the Prince of Wales's is loaded with quality — John & Thady Gosden's Ombudsman shapes up as the one to beat him.
Royal Ascot rarely disappoints, and the 2026 edition is set up for another week of elite sport. The likes of Opera Ballo, Precise, True Love and Bow Echo arrive with genuine top-level credentials and the scope to climb higher still. Aidan O'Brien looks certain to collect silverware somewhere along the way — but the fun, as always, is in working out exactly how and where.
Picking Royal Ascot winners is never simple — the festival has a habit of throwing up surprises. That unpredictability at the very highest level, wrapped in all the royal pageantry, is exactly what makes this meeting so special. Keep these eight names close, and enjoy the show.
